St Ives likes to celebrate the New Year in style and it is the perfect time to come and visit and explore...
The most important thing to have for 2014/15 is of course… fancy dress! About 95% of everyone in St Ives on New Years will be dressed up – there is no theme, just make sure you are wearing something silly. You can bring clothes with you to wear but in the run up to New Year, all the local charity shops have saved up all their fancy dress outfits and you will have a wealth of choice for children and adults too.
It is best to book a table in advance if you want dinner and although the pubs and bars will be busy, there is plenty of room for a super hero or a tiger. At midnight, everyone gathers on The Wharf to see the fireworks see in the New Year (with some people even going for a swim..brrrrr).
The next day, blow all the cobwebs away with a lovely beach walk or enjoy a warm English Breakfast with some tea and fresh coffee to ease you into 2015.

The Sail Lofts Christmas Party...
This years Christmas festivities found the
Sail Lofts team dining at Alfresco on Tuesday, enjoying a wonderful alternative
Christmas feast of pork belly starters and cod mains. We even had the delight
of being joined by the wonderful Kelly, who many of our returning guests will
know is currently on maternity leave, along with her gorgeous baby Evie...
Alfresco is situated along the harbour front here in St Ives, and is a firm favourite of the Sail Lofts and is always top on our recommendation list for any guests wondering where best to dine locally.
We would like to say a huge thank you to the Alfresco team for the great food and a brilliant afternoon had by all.

The Times, cool hotel guide...
Back
in September we had the pleasure of playing host to Times journalist Tom
Chesshyre, here is what he had to say…
A
mid a tangle of lanes dotted with art galleries behind the sandy curve of
Porthmeor beach, a small sign marks the entrance to a nondescript mid 20th-century
building with a whitewashed wall. Step inside and an archway opens into a
pretty courtyard with olive trees, neat rows of box hedges and a fountain.
Around this courtyard, and in a few connecting buildings, are 12 “boutique
apartments”. They’re really quite lovely.
In
a nutshell
The
name Sail Lofts comes from this once being a store for fishermen’s nets and
sails, which subsequently morphed into a pilchard pressing yard, before having
a spell as Mr Peggoty’s nightclub (apparently a St Ives institution). It has
been an upmarket apartment-hotel with a breakfast-in-bed service since 2008.
What
are the rooms like?
The
rooms are first class: minimalist yet warm with objets d’art, church candles
and bright modern art. Walls are painted white and most floors are blond wood.
Pastel blue, shocking pink and lavender coloured sofas add the colour to the
pared-down furnishings. Framed wall paintings include local seaside scenes. The
apartments come with either one, two, three or four bedrooms – and each has a
modern kitchen.
So
what is the food like?
Continental
breakfast-in-bed is an extra £15 a day for two people and includes croissants
from a nearby baker. Or you can opt for a full Cornish breakfast with bacon,
eggs, sausages, mushrooms, fresh bread and black pudding for £29.95 for two (you
cook the ingredients). These are delivered in hampers by a concierge, who will
also take orders for food so it is ready when you arrive, and can arrange for
fresh catches of fish – including lobsters – to be brought on a daily basis.
What
else is there to do?
The
Tate St Ives is a couple of minutes away by foot (www.tate.org.uk/visit/st-ives) and it’s a little
further along to the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden
(barbarahepworth.org.uk/st-ives). Guests at Sail Lofts are given tickets for
free entry to both. Sail Lofts also has a spa in a side room offering Elemis
treatments; massages are £55 an hour. Or take a walk along the coast; there are
many great routes, some with restful train rides back.

The Yellow Canary Cafe, St Ives...
Our lovely team member Kelly has just left
on her maternity leave and as part of the leaving ceremonies we popped in to
the Yellow Canary Café to grab some sweet afternoon treats. The yellow canary is a quirky independent family business established in 1972 and is the oldest cafe in St Ives!
They serve excellent coffee, pastries, Cornish pasties, Cornish Cream Teas and other tasty treats, well worth a visit if you ever find yourself in St Ives.
We went for the mud, almond and pecan pie, yum!

Autumn walks...
When I am not working in the salon
or the office, I love a good walk and October is a great time for putting those
walking boots to good use! With the weather having crisp sunny days it is great
chance to explore the coastal paths and other areas around Cornwall.
From St Ives you have a range of
choice. On a really low tide you can
walk all the way over to Carbis Bay on the beach and if you want to go further
– keep going to Lelant enjoying the miles and miles of empty sandy beaches. If
you’re feeling too tired for the stomp home just take the train. The branch
line to St Ives must be one of the most scenic train journeys in the country
snaking all the way along the coast.
When I‘m feeling particularly
energetic I also like to head out the other way towards Zennor. The coastal
path here is a bit like a climbing marathon but for a slightly easier option
you can head inland and take the coffin path, which leads across ancient fields
and settlements offering stunning views over towards the cliffs and seas. At
the end of the line drop into The Tinners Arms and enjoy a well deserved lunch.
Staying for a week or more – this is
a great time to skip over to the Scilly Isles for the day from Lands End
Airport. You can walk around St Marys in a day including lunch and a cream tea
at the end or take a boat trip to one of the islands and explore on foot.
The South Coast also offers some
interesting walks – The Fal River Walking Festival runs from 17th
October to the 2nd November or head up to Porthleven for the lovely
sunsets and surrounding walks. Local rumour has it that Rick Stein is opening a
restaurant here soon and there is already a great choice of pubs and
restaurants to choose from.
I love mainly walking with my dog
and with the beaches all dog friendly from the end of September, see, he is
even smiling!
Happy exploring!

Alfresco Theatre
Schools out for summer and the sun is
shining so why not make the most of the beautiful weather and take the family
to an outdoor theatre performance in Cornwall.
Nothing quite matches the charm and magic
of watching a show in the fresh air with expanses of sky above you and even the
space to spread out with your own blanket, cushions and tasty picnic!
The most famous outdoor theatre venue is of
course the Minack Theatre…
Nestled in the granite cliffs above the
azure waters of Porthcurno the amphitheatre looks as if it was carved by the
Greeks thousands of years ago. In
fact, it was just under eighty years ago that the magnificent structure was
created.
Throughout the summer
the Minack offers a busy schedule of events from storytelling for the children
in the daytime to classic Shakespeare plays in the evening. For more
information on what’s on at Minack just follow the link below:
For something a little
more contemporary there’s the Kneehigh Theatre Company based in Truro. Offering
a unique theatre experience from their bespoke nomadic tent in the heart of the
countryside, Kneehigh seek to evoke a sense of magic and playfulness through
their ground-breaking productions.
Also as a Kneehigh
ticket holder you will benefit from free access to the Lost Gardens of Heligan
from 6pm so you can enjoy the scenery and grab a bite to eat before the show.
To check out the Kneehigh summer schedule
follow the link below.
http://www.kneehigh.co.uk/page/the_asylum_kneehigh.php
Besides the Minack
and Kneehigh, the National Trust often have outdoor theatre events at their many
venues throughout Cornwall and finally The Miracle Theatre Company are also
worth a look as they offer numerous shows at a variety of locations in Cornwall.
If you've never been to an outdoor theatre performance I thoroughly recommend it and suggest you add it your list for summer 2014!

or treat yourself to a slice of one of their homemade cakes. The Allotment Deli
also do a number of gluten free options each day so if you struggle to find
tasty, gluten free goodies The Allotment Deli is the place to head for.

The Loft Larder is a new venture which is
an extension to the Loft Restaurant (and it’s right on our doorstop). The Larder will be selling a range of artisan

more.
St Ives Farmers Market
The Guildhall, St Ives – Every Thursday
Pop along to The Guildhall on a Thursday
for a real foodie treat where you can source a whole host of delicious Cornish
produce. Salted chocolate brownies, freshly caught seafood and bahjis and

on offer. If you call the office around lunchtime on Thursday and there’s no
answer, we’re more than likely here.
Enjoy!

Spoilt for choice...
I am quite frequently met with that classic
Cornish conundrum – which beach should I go to??! With just 10 miles separating
the South Coast from the North Coast we have access to a ridiculous number of
stunning beaches, coves and bays. From Porthcurno to Sennen, St Ives to Praa
Sands we are spoilt for choice!
But this Sunday, as I do live in the
gorgeous Marazion, I decided to stay local and go with Humphrey (our sunshine
addicted dog – I think he might be solar powered!) to the beach in front of St
Michaels Mount.
When we left the house the sun was shining,
the flowers were blooming…
and the tide was on its way out allowing
people to walk across the causeway to the mount…
It was so hot on the beach that Humphrey
and I decided to settle up on the quay where we’d get more of a breeze. We had
a really relaxing afternoon basking in the sun!
A couple of times I had to drag Humphrey
into nearby rock pools (to his disgust)
to make him cool off – I wish I’d got a picture of that, but I think
phone, dog and rock pool would have been a recipe for disaster!
It was a perfect way to spend a Sunday and
I can’t emphasize enough how beautiful Marazion is!

Cornish wildlife in June
June is an enchanting time to visit
Cornwall with everything coming to life at once…
Cornwall bursts into a rainbow of colour
this time of year with meadows dotted with ox-eye dasies and wild orchids and the
old granite hedgerows are draped in a blanket of fox gloves, blue bells, wild
garlic, lush ferns and cow parsley. A great way to appreciate the flora and
forna is on the 300 open top bus along the stunning coastal road from St Ives
to Lands End. Alternatively if you‘re feeling more adventurous you can always
walk the breathtaking coast line.
Many of the sites along West Penwith, where
you find these beautiful flowers, are also important breeding areas for a
variety of butterflies such as the Adonis Blue and the Dark Green Fritillaries
which can often be seen in June revealing their dashing colours.
June is also breeding time for many sea
birds around Cornwall. You don’t have to wander far in St Ives before you come
across female seagulls tucked up in their nests or fluffy chicks screeching out
to be fed. If it’s something a little more
unusual you’re looking for then make your way to the small headland known as
The Island where you can see adult Gannets, Guillemots and Razorbills. These diving birds
choose to hunt here as the tidal race which passes close to the point teems
with shoals of small fish which are perfect for feeding
their young who are usually hidden away in the remote coastal cliffs.
The well-stocked larder in the tidal current,
which surrounds the Island, also makes it a great place to spot pods of
dolphins and solitary seals. Check out the link below to see a recent clip of playful
dolphins in the sea off Porthmeor Beach.
If you fancy grabbing your binoculars and
coming to enjoy June’s impressive display of wildlife then take a look at our
gorgeous properties as we still have some available which are just moments away
from The Island and a few minutes from the West Penwith Coastal Path. There are
lots of wildlife events going on in June so just pop to the RSPB or Cornwall
Wildlife Trust website to check out their schedules:

Spring cleans...
Spring has arrived so we got out and about this weekend to make the most of it! We had 3 things on our minds: surf (after all it was offshore and clean), beach cleans and of course Mothers Day.
Setting out for an early surf on Saturday morning at Sennen we came out of the water just in time to take part in the Surfers Against Sewage beach clean organised by Sennen Surfing Center. An impressive turnout meant a huge amount of litter was picked up from the beach throughout the day, most of it marine litter from the recent storms. One more beach a bit tidier ready for the visitors arriving for Easter.
Sunday took a similar format but this time at Gwenver, a little more challenging as it is quite a walk back with the rubbish! The beach was noticeably cleaner afterwards which was fantastic to see. We owe a huge thank you to SAS and the local organisers (Sennen Surfing Center) for putting this on - we can all now enjoy cleaner beaches this summer. Even the seemingly clean Porthmeor had enough rubbish to fill 20 bags - good work to St Ives Surf School for organising!!
After all the surfing and clearing up, a Mothers Day Sunday lunch was inevitable, thanks to the Halsetown Inn for a great meal.
To see the superb efforts of the SAS beach cleans around the country last weekend just take a look at their Twitter feed: http://twitter.com/sascampaigns

You won’t need a boat, Cornwall isn’t underwater…
This week we’ve had lots of calls from concerned guests who
are worried they won’t be able to get to us due to the recent news reports that
Cornwall has been cut-off due to the recent storms.
Yes we’ve had some pretty dramatic weather, it’s been pretty
blowy on the coast and the high tides have been somewhat impressive but we’re a
pretty hardy bunch down here and the extreme weather hasn’t really phased us.
Rail travel into the county is likely to be disrupted for
the next few weeks but don’t let a little thing like that put you off, there
are still plenty of ways you can get your Cornwall fix:
By car All of the major routes into and around Cornwall
remain open so travelling by car is easy peasy! Especially as you will have an
allocated car parking space on arrival.
By air Regular flights bound for Newquay Airport depart
from London Gatwick and Manchester on a daily basis. Flybe have recently added
additional flights between London and Newquay to ease the pressure caused by
the rail disruptions. With one-way flights starting from just £39 versus a £60
off-peak rail single, flying into Cornwall is the financially savvy option.
We’ve also managed to negotiate preferential rates with our
friends at Apple Cabs for transfers between Newquay Airport and The Sail Lofts
so please get in touch if you need us to book you a taxi.
By coach National Express offer coach services into
Cornwall from most major towns and cities and with free WiFi now available on
their coaches it’s a great way to travel.
By rail Rail travel is still an option it may just take a
little longer than normal as direct routes may not be possible. Rail
replacements and diversions are all in place so if you do prefer train travel
just plan your journey in advance and you’ll be just fine.
Safe travels everyone,

Family fun on your doorstop…
With February half term just around the corner and the
chance of a heat wave near impossible, we thought our pick of fun family days
out might come in handy. We’ve kept it fairly local, but there are a couple of
gems that are worth the drive, especially if the weather isn’t great…
Screen-printing workshop…
At The Sail Lofts
Join local artist Dena O’Brien as she teaches you the basic
techniques of screen painting. Practice with your squeegee and pick our your
favourite colour before you create your very own photographic screen print of
St Ives.
Beach fun...
On our doorstep
Ok, so sun bathing, swimming and surfing probably aren’t
going to be much fun in February (unless you’re extremely brave), but there is
still so much fun to be had on the beaches in winter. The list is almost
endless but our favourites include kite flying, wave chasing, stone skimming,
football and rounders.
Splodge…
Just around the corner
If your little ones love getting creative and enjoy a bit of
messy play, pop along to Splodge where they can paint their own pot or plate to
take home. Hand painted pots are a great gift idea to take home for granny and
granddad or just as a memento of your St Ives holiday.
Paradise Park…
15 minute drive
A great day out for all ages, Paradise Park is Cornwall’s
top wildlife sanctuary where you can feed the penguins, the parrots and the
otters. There’s also a large indoor play area and a pirate trail where little
ones solve clues and questions to find the buried chocolaty treasure.
St Michaels Mount…
20 minute drive
Discover the legend and myth of over a thousand years of
incredible history on the Island of St Michael’s Mount. Learn about Cormoran
the giant, who once lived on the mount, who was slain by a local boy named
Jack. At low tide you can walk along the causeway or jump on a local boat and
approach the mount by sea.
Tehidy Woods…
20 minute drive
Stick on the wellies and head off to Tehidy Woods for a day
of fun. Great for wearing out the little ones they can climb trees, feed the
ducks, jump in muddy puddles and, if you take a bag of nuts, they can feed the
wild squirrels from their hands. There are also a number of circular walks
around the woods and a lovely little café where you can grab a bite to eat.
Heartlands Cornwall…
20 minute drive
With a giant adventure playscape, art and craft studios,
climb-on sculptures and plenty of outdoor space to let the children run wild,
Heartlands is a great place to spend a few hours. You’ll also find a number of
world-heritage site exhibitions which delve into Cornwall’s mining heritage.
Blue Reef Aquarium…
45 minutes drive
Get up close to the creatures of the deep at the fantastic
Blue Reef Aquarium. There’s sharks, turtles, octopus, crabs, lobsters, shrimps
and rays to name just a few. At the heart of the aquarium is an underwater
tunnel where you can enjoy close encounters with hundreds of brightly coloured
species, just watch out for the sharks!
Eden Project…
1 hour drive
Explore the world’s largest indoor rainforest, get your skates
on and take to the ice or soar above the treetops on the canopy walkway. During
the February half-term there will also be a range of extra activities on offer
including freaky nature, bug box, seed bombs and storytelling.
Have fun discovering!
